César Manrique Foundation

Lanzarote is simply 'César Manrique'. Artist, sculptor, designer and architect, César Manrique has had incredible and overwhelming influence on the Island. Born on the Island, his impact has ensured that all buildings on Lanzarote remained simple in colour and to a low-rise level ensuring that landscape and traditions were kept intact, enhancing the forbidding scenery of this volcanic Island. You will see that throughout Lanzarote the buildings are white with blue, green or natural woodwork. Rarely, will you encounter buildings/accommodation much over 3 stories high. César Monique's heavy influence will bring you face to face with his work as you land at Arrecife airport as he designed the interior.

The Foundation is the home and studio of the late César Manrique and was opened to the public after his death from a car crash in 1992. A display of this works, sculptures and paintings are on show in this home, which has been built into the remnants of volcanic eruptions dating back to the 1730's.
